Located just 25 kilometers north of Rovaniemi — the official hometown of Santa Claus — the Arctic SnowHotel is a masterpiece of frozen architecture rebuilt every winter from thousands of tons of snow and ice. This extraordinary venue transforms the raw materials of the Arctic into a place of wonder, artistry, and surprising warmth.
The SnowHotel is not merely a place to sleep; it's a complete sensory experience. Each winter, artists from around the world carve the hotel's rooms, corridors, and common spaces into elaborate sculptures illuminated by soft LED lighting. The temperature inside hovers at a steady -5°C, and guests sleep in thermal sleeping bags on ice beds covered with reindeer hides — an adventure unlike any other.
The wellness experience here centers on contrast therapy — the ancient Finnish practice of alternating between extreme heat and extreme cold. The on-site ice sauna is carved directly from frozen river water, and guests can follow their sauna session with a roll in fresh Arctic snow or a plunge into an ice hole. This cold therapy tradition has been practiced in Finland for centuries and is known to boost circulation, reduce inflammation, and create a profound sense of wellbeing.
For those who prefer a warmer sleep, glass igloos with heated floors offer Northern Lights viewing from bed. The resort also features traditional log cabins with private saunas, a restaurant serving Lappish cuisine, and a range of Arctic activities including snowshoeing, husky rides, and aurora hunts.
Snow hotel rooms start from approximately €200–€350 per night (including thermal sleeping gear and breakfast). Glass igloos range from €350–€600 per night. Log cabins with private sauna start at €200 per night. Activity packages range from €60–€150 per person. The snow hotel is open December through March; glass igloos and cabins are available year-round. Booking 3–6 months ahead is recommended for peak winter dates.
The SnowHotel itself is rebuilt each December and melts by April, making the winter months the only time to experience the ice structures. January and February offer the deepest snow and most dramatic Arctic conditions. For Northern Lights, September through March is prime viewing season. The glass igloos and cabins operate year-round for those interested in the midnight sun (June–July).
